THE PROCESS

I was commissioned to design and paint an entrance sign to welcome guests to the Head Quarters and Museum which is based in King’s Lynn in Norfolk.

A wooden fascia board was cut to shape, made up of two parts as it measured 4.5 meters in total and would be installed to the entrance canopy when complete.

The colour palette had to work and match with the existing branding and striped barbers poles each side which were painted with a burgundy, oxford blue, off white and finished with gold.

Inspiration was taken from vintage circus signage and the traditional signwriting from Carters Steam Fair. I explored different styles of type to make the most of the curved shape we had to work with to fill the area with the largest type possible. Adding bevel detail, a deep shadow and an outline that could be gilded worked well to tie in with the existing vintage aesthetic of the brand. An old style script was used either side to frame the ‘Museum’ type in the centre.

Handover and 1Shot gloss enamels were used for the lettering with the sign then being surface gilded with 23 carat Gold leaf followed by a clear coat for added protection.

The finished sign was installed in February 2024.
